This tour links the past, the present and the future of Mar del Plata. The heart of the city beats around Plaza San Martin (square), the civic, financial and commercial centre of the city. The salted meat factory which originated the primitive Puerto de Laguna de los Padres near Punta Iglesia was located nearby.
Aware of its potential, visionary Patricio Peralta Ramos provided for the foundation of Mar del Plata (10th February, 1874). Pedro Luro was also an important figure involved in the development of the city.

The starting point for this tour of the northern area of the city is Punta Iglesia.
The spectacular green landscape of Parque Camet (park) merges with a breathtaking coastal scenery.
Visitors will see residential neighbourhoods of fine and unique arquitecture, some of them located in protected forests which preserve their natural beauty and boast different colours according to the season.
It is also worth visiting some of the family-run businesses located along Autovía 2 (motorway).

Stella Maris, Los Troncos, Playa Grande and Divino Rostro are the most traditional neighbourhoods of Mar del Plata. They stand out because of the solid architecture of their residences in which noble materials like stone, wood and roof tiles prevail. The good taste is evident in the parks and gardens full of trees, bushes and flowers, one of their characteristic features.
Farther away, Pinos de Anchorena neighbourhood and the Casa del Puente (bridge house), a world-famous architectural paradigm which belonged to composer Alberto Williams, are worth visiting.

Puerto - Avenida Juan B. Justo - Playa Grande - Varese -
Torreón del  Monje

The port and its people are icons of the city. Sea lions, sea gulls, fishing boats, nets, fish traps and the exquisite cuisine turn the port into one of the main city attractions, a must-see for those who visit Mar del Plata.
Juan B. Justo Ave is ideal to go shopping. The area gathers shops specialized in top-quality knitted fabrics, surf and children clothing, jackets and sports clothes.
On the way back to the centre, tha sands of Playa Grande and Varese (beaches) alternate with the rocks of the Tandilia orographic system that dissapear in the sea.
The Torreón del Monje (tower) in Punta Piedras, on the foot of the Loma de Stella Maris (hill), is a fortress-like building whose name is derived from a romantic legend.

Punta Mogotes - Bosque Peralta Ramos - Alfar - Playas del Sur

The marked contrasts of the coastal, urban and rural areas make this tour unique. In the coastal southbound tour, gently sloped beaches alternate with others surrounded by lush vegetation (after the lighthouse) which turn into small beaches at the foot of the cliffs.
Neighbourhoods are named after the beaches facing them. With their pecularities, they represent a different way to enjoy Mar del Plata.
Mar del Plata is undoubtedly a centre for economic development in the region. Intense truck farming activity is carried out in the nearby farms. Due to the quality of the surrounding lands, the area is also an ideal location for crop growing and cattle raising activities.
The Ruta 11 (route) winds along the coast surrounded by wooded areas and panoramic viewpoints.

Reserva Laguna de los Padres â€“ Sierra de los Padres â€“ Paisajes Serranos

Mar del Plata is settled on the hill ranges of the Tandilia orogenic system originated in the Paleozoic Era. They stretch over the west central area of the General Pueyrredon District before disappearing into the sea.
Several hill ranges - del Acha, de Valdez, de los Padres, de los Difuntos and de la Peregrina (the highest one with 230 metres) rise amid agricultural fields and scattered wooded areas.
The Ruta 226 (route) boasts magnificent landscapes, lakes, streams and hills and invite visitors to reach areas beyond the limits of the General Pueyrredon District.

Quintas y Canteras â€“ Campos Ondulados

The Tandilia hill system, on which Mar del Plata is settled, stretches over 350 kilometres between the cities of Bolivar and Mar del Plata (province of Buenos Aires). These eroded formations are covered by sediments which shaped gently sloped fields.
These rocky formations, just like the hill ranges, are made up of quartzite of great antiquity, highly appreciated in the construction industry and exploited by numerous quarries.
The fertile soil (80-cm-thick humus layer), the suitable climatic conditions and the abundant supply of water turn this area into a privileged one. Intense truck farming activity is carried out in the farms surrounding Batán city, which caters for the needs of other major urban centres.
Ruta 88 (route), the Camino de las Canteras (trail) and the Camino San Francisco de Asís (trail), cover the whole area.
